Why do quotes range from $16,000 to $28,000?
The unit itself is only part of the price. The spread comes from generator size (22 vs 28kW), gas supply (a PG&E meter upgrade adds cost and time), your panel's age and capacity, distance between generator, gas, and panel, and your city's permit requirements. Can I save money installing it myself or with a handyman?
Standby generators tie into your gas line and your electrical service — both legally require permits, and the utility work requires a licensed contractor.
